He nailed the fastest time on his initial run in the final qualifying session, even after grazing the wall exiting Turn 17, and then shaved off another 0.007 seconds on his second attempt. For beginners, qualifying (or 'qualy') is the intense session where drivers push their cars to the absolute limit to secure the best starting positions—it's like a mini-race where mistakes can cost dearly.
But here's where it gets controversial: Verstappen and Piastri couldn't better their times on their final laps, and the four-time world champion pointed the finger at Norris for allegedly holding him up in the closing sector. Norris, meanwhile, acknowledged the gap: 'We weren't fast enough; the Mercedes were significantly quicker. I didn't nail it all together, and on a track like this, you have to.' He added optimistically, 'There are still opportunities ahead.'
Hamilton edged out Leclerc for the first time since the British Grand Prix, signaling a recent uptick in his form. He topped the first practice session and criticized Ferrari's strategy: 'The speed was there; we just didn't maximize the later sessions, from Q2 on. I'm feeling more at ease in the car, driving well this weekend. But P6 isn't ideal—we should have been higher. It all boiled down to tire temperatures today, as it often does. Tomorrow's race will be challenging from this position; there's not much we can change now.'
